drm, wtf

i think anyone here who knows what drm (digital rights management) is probably hates it as i do. i want to actually own the music i own.

desipte this, prepare for me to sheepishly make a statement… the idea of renting music actually appeals to me.

a few subscription services are starting to pop up. basically, $15 per month enables you to load your mp3 player up with any music you want. if you stop paying, the music expires at the end of the period. the more i think about it, the better of a deal it seems to be.

unfortunately, investment in this idea requires a compatible mp3 player and (ughh) use of windows media player. i’d feel dirty. you also need a compatible mp3 player. the ipod is unsurprisingly not compatible, so i’d have to invest in a feeble ipod wannabe like the zen micro.

i’m hoping apple decides to give the subscription idea a whirl. i’d be all over it.

  1. i had a iriver 20 gig mp3 player and used napster to go service it was ok the mp3’s were in 128 bit i kinda would of prefered 192 but that wasnt an option, i stoped using it however because of the drm shit…. actually once the music is copied to teh mp3 player it will always play my advice stick with lime wire and an i-pod i have a 2 gig nano and love it also on the iriver the controls were similiar to the zen units… however i diddnt really like them i mean they worked but i just ddiddnt like them too much….my two cents whitt out

  2. also there were ways to use plug-ins for win-amp to play the drm’d file and the plug in would make a recording of the sounds coming out of the speaker output and tag it to a new mp3 without the drm, however these ways no longer work, and i have looked into new solutions im sure there are some
