holding the door

i’m one of those people that tend to hold the door for people.

today, i realized a fundamental problem with door holding. i will refer to this as “the grey area”.

you see, before holding the door for someone, you have to determine if there is someone behind you of which to hold the door for. this is the zone between roughly 8-12 or so feet away from you.

you see, if someone is in this “grey area”, you have to be careful. if you hold the door, you’ll be standing there for a few seconds waiting for the person to approach. this can be a bit awkward. otherwise, if the person is walking faster than most, its possible that you’ll let the door slam in their face.

so, what do you do with the grey area? usually i will opt to not hold the door.

  1. believe it or not, but i feel the grey area as a female. it’s also awkward for me to determine if they’re going to hold the door while i’m so far away, and if i should speed it up a bit in order to save them from spending their day standing at the door.
