dayton

this past weekend was the dayton hamfest. i’ve not missed a one since i was probably six or seven. anyway, it’s a massive geek-fest of ham radio, computer, telecom, network, and general dweebs from all around the world.

they say that if you can’t find it at dayton, it doesn’t exist. this used to be true, but the ‘fest has really gone downhill in recent years. i used to have great difficulty deciding what to spend my limited monies on. this year i actually returned with money in my pocket. wtf!

i did pick up a few random items though. the ‘big’ purchase was an arrow 2m/70cm satellite antenna. i’ve been wanting one for awhile to do some amsat stuff. as a side bonus, it’s good for fox hunting and general operating as well.

also bought a studio grade cd player (optical out!) for 15 bones, a stick of registered ecc ram for the new server, and a few other random oddities.

i’m thinking about skipping out next year. it’s a shame, but ebay has pretty much taken over as the primary way to geek out with your cash. dayton remains as a place to haul all of the shit that isn’t worth listing.

  1. I think Dayton will always (or at least a few more years to come) have the distinction of *the* place to go to see all things ham. The ARRL convention and all the various asundry forums are cool, not to mention the fact that one can travel hours to see all the hams that live within 20 miles of them 🙂

It is a shame that the ‘fest has started to fall, but honestly, I’m surprised it’s held on this long. The Internet has done some great things for communication, but most people don’t know their history (I think this is true of many things, not just the ‘net, but I digress). At least there isn’t spam on the ham bands 🙂

But if there were any doubt that the old tech still has its place, see this excerpt from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno:

  2. speaking as a fellow ham, between cell phones and ebay the ham community is on its way out. Sadly…….
