the tank on sts-1 was painted for the same reason, b ecause it spent too much time outside and they were afraid of the insulation falling off. Emron paint is actually an elastomeric coating that will keep the insulation from falling off. It’s a good solution, somebody should test it.

perhaps its time they outsourced shuttle design to the japanese.
Painting the tank will just mean that the chunks that fall off will be painted.
