the nineties were so choice

i’ve been playing fifteen-year-old computer games (hey, its almost legal) and loving it!

stumbling across an emulator for some of the old lucasarts games, i decided to break out the original monkey island. i beat it at work a few days ago. 🙂

with the nova scotia trip just hours away, i can now load up the os/x port of scummvm on my ibook and break out monkey island 2 and 3!

there are also emulators to play some of the older sierra games (kings quest, space quest, and my personal admiration — leisure suit larry), but i’m just not ready to dive into that yet.

this whole charade has left me missing adventure games. in a world dominated by online rpgs and first person shooters, i have to ask — where’s the adventure bacon? where are the games that don’t let you die simply because the developers know your frustration over a puzzle is likely to make you suicidal?

  1. Pretty much dead themselves. There’s a few things that come and go that look like they might be interesting. Psychonauts, which was made by the team that made Grim Fandango just came out. Apart from that, you’re best bet is to go hunting through Home of the Underdogs for stuff you might have missed.

  2. yes, that is cool…i’ve that on my iBook for close to a year now although I haven’t messed with it for like six months….there’s a site called like orphan games or something that all has all the abandon ware ’90s mac games…but, of course, i’ve forgetten the url…
