rent: 1; bon jovi: 0

i decided to semi-surprise my girlfriend this past weekend. she’s a huuuge rent fan, but had never seen the broadway version. her love for it combined with the coming movie version sparked my interest in it. so, on a whim i bought tickets and decided we’d drive to new york.

the original plan was to completely surprise her. however, she’s so much better at making food and hotel arrangements than i, so i had to inform her a few days in advance.

new york city is just fucking cool. i love manhattan. i love times square. everything’s still open when it’s midnight, and it’s so bright that you’d swear it was daytime.

rent was great. nederlander theatre dates back to the 30’s, and it appears that they haven’t done much restoration since then. the mildly run-down status of the place added quite a bit to my enjoyment of it all.

on sunday, dana informed me that we had to go to some clothing store (h&k?) because, apparently, there are no clothing chain stores in ohio. but i’m whipped, so i give in easily. then we geocache successfully in queens, and rather unsuccessfully in brooklyn.

fast forward to tuesday. dana is also a massive bon jovi fan. and i… well, we’ll say that while i don’t strongly dislike his music, i’m not really a fan either. i’m always one for a concert though, and i would have probably sat at home removing belly button lint or something otherwise.

the show was rather un-impressive. b.j. did what one would expect: cater to the female element. nothing like an old guy in leather everything who still bleaches the piss out of his mullet well into his 40’s. his new stuff is awful, and he must have been too tired to put much stage effort into the stuff that the crowd actually liked. still, the ladies were going nuts. the teen behind me was “oh-my-gawding” at everything. wow, he’s playing and singing out in the audience! original! no one’s ever done that! ohmygawdhe’sdancingwithafan!

but dana looooved it, and that’s what matters.

  1. If she means H & *M*, there’s one at The Mall at Tuttle Crossing now. I just went in there yesterday and had a ball looking at clothing I couldn’t afford to buy. Nice stuff. 🙂

  2. Yes, it was h&m, but i was bummed because the one in brooklyn didn’t have any clothes bigger than an “l”. ugh. but they were such cute clothes. and, i didn’t make ‘im drive back into manhattan, so it wasn’t all bad…

as for bon jovi, well, matt’s a fan of indie bands, and i’m a fan of hair bands. so, it’s a compromise. next indie band concert he wants to see, i’m there.
