oh, point of clarification:
vi != vim
vi is a terminally impaired editor that in most cases won’t even read arrow keys properly. If you know the magic incantations though, it can be wicked useful.
vim is Vi IMproved, which has a wonderful terminal interface complete with syntax highlighting.
First thing I do on a Debian system is:
aptitude install ssh less vim

and much <3 for vim… at first, it was awkward to work with, but once you get used to it, it’s not as bad as people make it to be 🙂
